Rates & Reels Ep. #13 – Dr. Billy Truax vs. Goliath Grouper

Rates & Reels Ep. #13 – Dr. Billy Truax vs. Goliath Grouper

On this episode of Rates & Reels, we go fishing for Goliath Grouper with longtime friend and top dentist in SWFL, Dr. William “Billy” Truax of Dr. Billy Truax Dental Office . This episode is a very special one for me. Not only is Dr. Billy a friend but he also donated money to our kids school, Saint Michael Lutheran School, to win an episode of Rates & Reels. Thanks for your donation Dr. Billy!

Goliath Grouper Time!

This episode will be like no other episode on Rates & Reels because the doctor of dentistry has a date with destiny. When Dr. Truax was 8 years old he had an encounter with a Goliath Grouper in the backyard of his parents house. This experience has scarred Dr. Truax throughout his life and he has always wanted to get revenge on the mighty Goliath Grouper.

Could this be the fishing trip where the Dr. gets his revenge? There is no better Captain to go after Goliath Grouper than Captain Bo Johnson of Tenacity Guide Service.

Dr. Billy also talked some trash about past guests, Dane Eagle and Pastor Jon Zehnder. Did the trash talk backfire on him during the episode? Spoiler Alert: It did and was glorious.

During our 3 Questions segment, Dr. Billy discusses a ton of different topics including.

* Graduating from UF and how being a dentist is in his blood
* How nitrous oxide makes some patients hit on him
* Dealing with scared patients
* What you can do to avoid ever seeing him
* And many other interesting items.

What a great time had by all of us and I hope you enjoy the episode!

Please remember to like, share and subscribe to our page so you can see future episodes of Rates & Reels.

Have a great day!

Rates & Reels Episode #12: With Coach Jamie Corr of FSW Baseball

Rates & Reels Episode #12: With Coach Jamie Corr of FSW Baseball

When you’re a serious fisherman, you don’t let a little weather get in the way — usually. As I was reminded in last month’s episode of “Rates & Reels,” alongside FSW baseball coach Jamie Corr and our aptly-named guide, Ozzie Fischer, sometimes the best fishing happens just before the storm. But when you start hearing thunderclaps stretch out over the open ocean, it might just be time to head in.

We started the day near Sanibel, hunting with cut bait at Cpt. Fischer’s suggestion for the local school of redfish that had been cruising the area lately. Lo and behold, within just a couple hours, we had one on the line. After he put up the fight of a much bigger fish, I finally managed to drag the hearty redfish aboard. He wobbled around in my hands for a bit, but after getting a shot for the camera, we sent the sucker on his way and got back to work.

Well, “work” is a relative term. As coach Jamie and I played the waiting game and stood around with our lines in the water, we, of course, talked about baseball. I could have sat chatting about the sport all day, but before too long, it was time for me to drag another redfish kicking and screaming onto the boat. “Looks like another good redfish on the Tim Hart fishing show,” joked Cpt. Ozzie. But hey, I have to say that it was! Still, I almost felt bad. “I’m not being a good host, so far,” I said. “Coach Jamie’s caught a catfish, and I’ve got two reds — no more lines in the water for Tim.”

Luckily, coach Jamie hooked his own monster red within about an hour. Let’s just say that quality won out over quantity, here. This guy was so big he escaped from Jamie’s grasp just before we sent him back into the water.

Of course, it wouldn’t be “Rates & Reels” without our trademark 3 Questions segment. For this episode, I met up with coach Jamie at the City of Palms Park right here in downtown Fort Myers. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a guest as eager to answer my questions as coach Jamie was.

My first question was about what coach Jamie thought of the classic divide between year-round baseball players vs. multisport. “When you’re talking about creating the well-rounded athlete, I think multisport is the way to go. It gets kids in a competitive atmosphere year round, which you want, but it also introduces them to other sports and lets them meet other kids, which I think is so important.” He continued, “You need to hit a baseball every single day of the year. But you don’t need to throw a ball every single day of the year.”

The second came from viewer Derek Hoines: “At what age do you start recruiting players, and what do you look for?”

“Being a junior-college coach, we start recruiting a lot later than other programs,” coach Jamie said. “We come in the picture for three kinds of kids: (1.) the athlete who is not quite at the ability level to play at the Division 1 school they want to [so they come to us to get their ability up to snuff]; (2.) the D-1s really want that young man, but he just didn’t get the grades. So, they need to come to us to get the academics in line to where he can qualify for the Division 1 scholarship; (3.) and the one we really love to go after is the bona fide Division 1 player who gets even better and has pro aspirations.”

I asked my last question from a personal standpoint as a Little League coach. What advice did coach Jamie have for us Little League coaches to help our kids? “First and foremost … you’re the most important coach in these kids’ lives. You’re No.1 … the Little League coach needs to be more in tune with developing the athlete on the baseball field with his fundamentals.” He continued, “Don’t worry about winning … develop a modality where you’re focusing on the quality at bat.”

Back on the water, coach Jamie and I closed out the day in a different spot, racing to see who could catch the most mangrove snappers. In the end, the count ended at 7-4, me versus Jamie, which might make it sound like I won the competition — until you take a look at Jamie’s second and third fish, which were two of the most gigantic snappers I’ve ever seen.

All in all, it was a fantastic time with two great guys. Coach Jamie fought the fish valiantly, and Capt. Fischer stayed true to his name and put us on the fish like an animal. A big thanks to everyone involved. Until next time, wishing you low rates and tight lines!

Meet Captain John Conway, The Man Behind the Beard

Meet Captain John Conway, The Man Behind the Beard

When Captain John Conway got laid off more than nine years ago from his job teaching clients how to effectively invest in real estate, he wasn’t sure what he would do next. One day, while having a beer with a couple of his buddies, someone came up with an idea. “Hey John,” they said, “ why don’t you become a fishing guide?” Though John certainly had intimate knowledge of the surrounding waters and a passion for fishing, he thought it sounded a little too much like a pipe dream.

But the idea was planted. After a little research, John realized that if he combined the thousands of hours he’d spent fishing in the Caloosahatchee and the Gulf of Mexico with a small initial investment, he might have a viable project on his hands after all.

Fast- forward almost a decade, and his business, Conway Charters, is one of the very best boat chartering companies in all of Southwest Florida. As a frequent passenger on Johns’ boat, I can tell you “not only does Captain John boast an expert knowledge of Florida waters, but he brings his enthusiastic, funny personality to every trip.”

John’s main goal is to show a good time to anyone who ends up on his boat. “I just like to take people fishing!” he says. “For me, it’s all about keeping the rods bent. Guiding is 10 percent fishing skill and 90 percent personality.”

“Other guides may go out and only ever hint for the big monsters,” Captain John says. “But instead of ending up with one or two bites in four  hours, I’d rather help my passangers catch 80 fish in the same amount of time! Every single one might not be a huge trophy fish, but for most people, it’s a lot more fun.”

No matter what the conditions, John always manages to deliver, and he never tries to sell or over-promise anything to a customer. Hes a great guy and a master fisherman. Ifyour looking for the fishing trip of your life, give him a call at 239-410-0067 or visit him online at www.conwaycharters.com – we highly recommend it!

Rates and Reels Episode #11: Kevin Offerman of City Tavern

Rates and Reels Episode #11: Kevin Offerman of City Tavern

You guys are going to love this episode!

Our special guest for the 11th episode of Rates and Reels is Fort Myers native and long time owner of City TavernKevin Offerman. City Tavern is one of the most popular bars in downtown Ft Myers. Kevin has been a friend of mine for a long time so I was super excited to go fishing with him.

Kevin took us fishing in his decked out boat and brought along his friend and Captain Kerry Trotter. Captain Kerry killed it all day!

This day started at 4:30 in the morning so it was a long one but worth it! We went out 80 miles into the Gulf of Mexico to fish for Grouper, Amberjack, African Pompano a few other surprises.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Chef Brian Duffy filmed and episode of Rates and Grills where he cooked up the Snapper and Grouper we caught. That was one of the coolest things I have done since starting Rates and Reels.
  • Caught an Amberjack that had to be four foot long
  • Huge Grouper and the largest Mangrove Snapper I have ever caught
  • Had an Amberjack bit in half by a bull shark and so much more!

Rates & Reels Episode #9: Dan James & Brady Nelson of Dan James Rod Company

Rates & Reels Episode #9: Dan James & Brady Nelson of Dan James Rod Company

Rates & Reels is out fishing with Dan James and Brady Nelson of Dan James Rod Company. We are putting Dan James’s rods to the test against Permit and Barracuda and they passed with flying colors!

We left Royal Shell Port Sanibel Marina and went straight to a shrimp boat wreck where we battled Barracuda and Permit all day long! Captain Ryan Lee Kane of Southern Instinct Charters had us all over the fish and did an amazing job!

Take a few minutes and listen to Dan James explain how he got into the rod building business and what the future holds for Dan James Rod Company. Him and Brady are doing amazing things in that shop and I know they will succeed.

He also answered a few question that came in from Amber Strack and Stefanie Hart. The backdrop of the interview was made by The Patriot Standard Flags. I know some of you will ask because it is so cool!

If you are in the Fort Myers area, make sure you swing by and see Dan James and Brady at their shop. They are great guys and do an amazing job!

Rates and Reels Episode #8: District 77 Florida State Rep Dane Eagle

Rates and Reels Episode #8: District 77 Florida State Rep Dane Eagle

On this episode of Rates & Reels, I got to take out District 77 Florida State Rep Dane Eagle. It was really a pleasure to spend time with Dane and get to know him. It was an amazing June day in SWFL. Light winds and sunny was going to make for a great day of fishing.

The plan was to go Tarpon fishing with legendary Captain Bo Johnson of Tenacity Guide Service but we got a late start. Captain Bo wanted to be out on the water by 6:30 am and due to last minute scheduling conflicts on my side we had to move the time up a few hours. That did not work in our favor.

We saw acres upon acres of tarpon but could not get them to bite anything. The bite had just died off once we had arrived. Lesson learned for the Rates and Reels show. Go fishing when the captain tells you to go!! Sorry Bo!

We did manage to hook into a huge cobia. Dane worked that cobia like he would work a bill on the house floor. Sorry for the political pun. That is all I got!

I did add a new segment to our show called “Rates and Grills” I grilled the cobia that Dane caught and had my sons as taste testers. I’m biased but I think they did a pretty good job and they made me laugh. Hope you like it!

During the interview Dane talks in depth about water quality, Visit Florida and his future in politics. It was very cool to listen to him talk about Florida politics and provide us some insight on how things work.

Thanks for everyone’s support with this show. It is truly done to promote our area and the leaders in it.

Rates and Reels Episode #7: Ben Hemmen of the Fort Myers Miracle

Rates and Reels Episode #7: Ben Hemmen of the Fort Myers Miracle

Baseball, hot dogs, beer and fun. That is what I think of when I hear Fort Myers Miracle the The Minnesota Twins minor league affiliate in Fort Myers is the only minor league baseball team in Lee County and one great time.

The Miracle now have a new COO/VP named Ben Hemmen and I was lucky enough to have him as a guest on Episode 7 of Rates & Reels.

The day started off great when he hooked me up with a Miracle hat and peanuts. Score!

First fishing stop was a flat that was loaded with Trout. Ben and I both caught plenty of keepers and some undersized ones as well.

We then moved to a couple of spots around the mangroves to catch some snook. We got a few but no monsters.

Ben is from Kansas so this was his first time experiencing our SWFL waters and he loved it.

I got to interview him at Hammond Stadium during a Miracle game which was awesome. I love that place!

I was really impressed by Bens passion for baseball and his willingness to do the best he can at his new job.

We discussed his future for the Miracle, how he thinks the new coach will do and all the cool promotions that the Miracle have coming up. He seems excited about the upcoming promotion on August 26th called Recount Election night where the first 500 fans get a Russian Nesting Doll and everyone will get to vote again. Little known fact is that the Miracle fans have correctly picked the last 5 Presidential winners.

Ben is a great guy and I know he will do well at his new job. It was a pleasure getting to know him out on the water.

Make sure you get out there and catch a game or nine this season. It is a great time! Hope you enjoy the show! Low Rates and Tight Lines!

Rates and Reels Episode #6: Tom VanDyk of VanDyk Mortgage

Rates and Reels Episode #6: Tom VanDyk of VanDyk Mortgage

Honored that the President of the company that I have partnered with since 2008 decided to come down and be a guest on Rates & Reels. Tom VanDyk of VanDyk Mortgage Corporation is an amazing businessman with a wealth of knowledge and just an all-around cool guy.

We had a blast hanging out all day on the boat and back at Jensen’s Twin Palm Resort and Marina where Tom stayed overnight. Sounds like he loved the place except for them not having a hair dryer. Tom is in his 60’s and still has a full head of hair and is not afraid to use it!

The fishing was slower for us that day. A cold front had just finished coming through but we made the best of it.

The trip was worth it just to hear Tom yell “Holy Tamoly!” twice when he caught a Spade Fish. Holy Tamoly……Classic!

We caught some mangrove snappers and grunts as well. I also had a conversation with a Tomato Grunt. That was kind of awkward.

What impressed me most about Tom was that he basically broke into a coaching session with me over lunch. He has hundreds of employees but showed me how much he really cared about me and my business.

I would like to personally thank him and his team for everything they do for my business, team and family.

Hope you enjoy the show!
